[ARCHIVED] Out and about: stay alert

Helpful tips for joggers and walkers

The following safety tips for walkers and joggers are offered by Corporal Sonia Luzader of the Hot Springs Public Information Department.

Before you go
Plan your outing and make sure others know where you are headed
Know where access to phones can be made or bring your cell
Carry identification of some kind, or at least write your information inside of your athletic wear; include medical information
Do not wear jewelry or carry cash

On the road
Avoid walking alone and at night
Stay in well lit, populated areas, away from bushes, alleys, and parked cars
Consider using a treadmill
Don’t take short cuts through vacant lots, parks or fields
Don’t overload yourself by carrying items
If you sense you are being followed, go to the nearest busy place
Never hitchhike or accept a ride from a stranger
Be alert when giving someone directions and stay a safe distance from their vehicle
Always be aware of your surroundings
If you must go at night, wear reflective shoes and clothing

When away from home
Ask hotel staff about safe areas and study the route
Know the address for your hotel and carry it with you along with your ID
Let hotel staff know you are out exercising and leave them your room key

Mall walkers
Park as close to the building as possible in a well-lit area
Lock your vehicle
Have keys in your hand before you get to your car
Check under your car and in your backseat before entering
Walk with confidence and pay attention
Teach your children how to go for help if they are with you and become separated
(Each child should have emergency contact information of some kind on their person)
Be careful at ATMs, and pay by check or credit card when possible

Zoning out
Along with “runner’s high” comes a focus that could be a detriment to safety. When in this zone, you can lose track of what is going on around you. This puts runners and joggers at a greater risk of attack. Keep alert, and memorize vehicle license plates or other identifying characteristics of automobiles as well as strangers in your immediate surroundings. Seeing them more than once could be a danger sign. Always be aware of traffic when “in the zone.”
