The City of Hot Springs awarded the contract today for clearing the debris in front of the “yellow” brick portion of the Majestic Hotel on Park Avenue in the downtown area. Weather permitting, mobilization is planned to begin this evening, with work beginning on Friday and completed by that evening or Saturday. Motorists and nearby pedestrians are advised to use caution when traveling near the project area.
The city reviewed bids from five local excavating companies, awarding the contract to W.J. Smith Excavating as the lowest bidder at $4,450. The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) has been notified of the work schedule. The project cost will be billed to the property owner.
Following an official finding of no significant asbestos-containing materials in the area adjacent to the sidewalk in front of the Majestic Hotel “yellow brick” building, the City of Hot Springs obtained approval yesterday from the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) to clear the sidewalk for pedestrian access.
After more than a year of inaction on the part of the property owner since the Majestic Hotel succumbed to fire on February 27, 2014, the city is proceeding with the project. The property owner is Garrison Hassenflu of Kansas City-based Park Properties, LLC.
