A controlled burn of approximately 189 acres is occurring today between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. west of Dillon Lake and Lake Sanderson, approximately three miles north of Hot Springs.
Steep Creek Fire and Land Management will be executing the prescribed burn. The ecological and hazardous fuels reduction burn aims to reduce organic carbon in the City of Hot Springs drinking water supply; invigorate herbaceous understory; maintain and improve biodiversity, habitat structure and composition for wildlife habitat; reduce mid-story and understory woody vegetation; maintain basal area/acre open overstory of pine and oak; and reduce general fuels to negate wildfire impacts.
There is potential for low to moderate smoke production, but the area is in a remote area with residences sparsely dispersed within a 5-mile radius.
