[ARCHIVED] Director Karen Garcia earns leadership award from AML

Karen Garcia headshotAt the Arkansas Municipal League’s 86th Annual Virtual Convention, held August 19-21, City of Hot Springs Director Karen Garcia (District 5) was honored with the Adrian L. White Municipal Leadership Award.

The Adrian L. White Municipal Leadership Award is presented to municipal officials who have served with distinction and dedication to their cities and the League’s boards, councils or committees for six years. It is named in honor of White, who was mayor of Pocahontas from 1967-1974 and a former League president and vice president.

Garcia was re-elected in 2018 to serve 2019 through 2022. She has been a lifelong proponent of community service. She volunteers for Head Start, Early Head Start and various other charities in the community, and has served on the City’s Airport Advisory Committee and the Henderson State University School of Business Advisory Council. A certified public accountant, she retired from Weyerhaeuser in 2014 after a 27-year career.

Amid the uncertainty and health concerns surrounding the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the League hosted the convention and annual business meeting completely online, and it featured a combination of live and pre-recorded sessions with a focus on current events and timely programming for a remote audience of around 1,000 city and town leaders.

The Arkansas Municipal League is a service and advocacy organization for the municipalities of Arkansas. The League offers its programs and services to the 500 cities and towns in Arkansas and was created in 1934 to assist cities with information and representation in the public affairs of our state and nation.
