At a recent Board of Directors meeting, Mayor McCabe presented a proclamation for National Service Recognition Day to Senior Companion Program Assistant Director for Area Agency on Aging Dorothy Brennan. The proclamation honored AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers for their work with area seniors. Accompanying Brennan were, from left: Senior Companion Program Director Lori Voss and Senior Companions Vina Cook and Betty Moon and (not pictured) Senior Companion Program Volunteer Coordinator Joyce Chambers. The Area Agency on Aging of West Central Arkansas Senior Companions has helped senior adults live independent, meaningful and dignified lives since 1973. Senior Companions are volunteers 55 and older who are paired with area seniors who need caring support.
The annual event is hosted by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency responsible for national service and volunteering in America, with support from the National League of Cities, National Association of Counties and Cities of Service.
CNCS places members and volunteers into all areas of the community through partnerships with schools, faith-based groups, nonprofits and local agencies. Approximately 300,000 AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers are stationed in more than 50,000 locations each year.
