The 2017 Arts in the Park festival will host a special movie screening at the greenspace formerly occupied by the Majestic Hotel at 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, the festival’s opening day. The event, which will be held free of charge, is open the general public and presented by the Hot Springs Cultural Alliance, Visit Hot Springs and the City of Hot Springs.
At the event, The Shadow Ensemble will perform the live score to the influential 1927 Fritz Lang sci-fi film, Metropolis. The large movie screen will be placed so that anyone heading north on Central Avenue will be drawn to the area.
“Although many motorists and citizens have driven by the site, very few have gotten the chance to take in that amazing view,” said Assistant City Manager Lance Spicer. “This is a great first opportunity, which we hope will facilitate more thought and discussion for the future redevelopment of the site.
“I have recently secured the approvals of both ADEQ and the contractor, FTN Engineering, for this activity in that it will not impact Phase II site assessment work. This effort is the first of a series of programs to activate the space, allowing citizens and the entire community to view the property in a different light.”
Those attending are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, blanket and picnic basket to the Majestic green for a unique movie screening experience. Arts & The Park, a ten-day festival of the arts in Hot Springs, will take place April 28 through May 7. For more information visit http://www.hotspringsarts.org.
