The City of Hot Springs Arts Advisory Committee is sponsoring its 2nd Annual UpCycle Sculpture Festival on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. along the Hot Springs Creek Greenway Trail next to the Hot Springs Farmers & Artisans Market, 121 Orange Street.
Students, teachers and professional artists are encouraged to participate in this free event. Entrants will display original art created from reused materials. “As an alternative to today’s ‘throw-away culture,’ this event will show how imagination can turn any discarded materials into a work of art,” said Dale Blackwelder, Arts Advisory Committee chairman.
Artists must be able to transport, set up and remove their art. Awards for top sculptures in the six categories as well as a People's Choice award will be presented at noon.
Competition categories include:
Category 1: Individuals up to 12 years of age
Category 2: Individuals 12 years of age through high school
Category 3: Adult individuals
Category 4: Professional artist submissions
Category 5: Groups five years of age through high school
Category 6: Adult groups
The entry deadline is April 4. Applications, available at online at cityhs.net, can be mailed to the Parks & Trails Department, 111 Opera Street, Hot Springs, AR 71901. There are no fees and no rules for construction of sculpture pieces. Call 501-321-6871 or email parktrl@cityhs.net for more information. “We had many artists show an interest in returning for this year's event and hope all of Hot Springs will come see these wonderful creations,” Blackwelder added.
