At 10:10 a.m. this morning, the Hot Springs Fire Department received a report of a vehicle at 454 Broadway Street having a “Civil War” style cannonball in the trunk. Upon arrival, Hot Springs Fire Department personnel assessed the situation and determined the cannonball could still be active. With assistance of the Hot Springs Police Department, a perimeter was set up around the vehicle, and two businesses were evacuated for safety concerns. The Garland County Office of Emergency Management was notified of the situation, and they sent a request to the Arkansas State Police Bomb Squad to respond for assistance. The bomb squad arrived on scene and secured the cannonball. Under the advisement of the bomb squad, the cannonball was taken to the Garland County Landfill and detonated by the bomb squad.
