In observance of National Kids to Parks Day, the Hot Springs Parks & Trails Department will partner with the Southwest Arkansas Geocachers to offer “Geocaching 101” to kids of all ages beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at Entergy Park, 530 Lakepark Drive.
Geocaching is an adventure-packed activity that is much like a high-tech scavenger hunt. It requires participants to use a Global Positioning System (GPS) device or smartphone to hide and seek containers called caches. The phone app version of the geocaching.com website can be downloaded for free on any type of smartphone via iTunes App Store, Google Play, or Windows Phone.
Participants at the Kids to Parks Day event will learn how to use a GPS device and the geocaching.com application. They will find out what to do once they find a cache and how to sign the log. They will also learn how to trade knick-knacks, travel bugs, what types of camouflage to use, how to speak the lingo, and more. Comfortable clothing, shoes, insect spray, and sunscreen are advised. Special caches will be hidden for the event, which ends at noon. For information call 321-6871.
