City, county collaborate on Health Unit funding proposal

County Judge Rick Davis and City Manager David Frasher stated that the two governments have been working together to provide more stable funding for the Garland County Health Unit, located at 1425 Malvern Avenue in Hot Springs. After discussions with Arkansas Health Department officials, Davis and Frasher determined that 2018 revenues needed to equitably fund historically-shared costs at the facility would be $35,000 each from the county and the city, down from $45,000 last year.

Services at the Garland County Health Unit include, in part, immunizations, food protection, general sanitation, vital records and women’s health.

“I am very pleased that the city and county were able to collaborate on this issue,” Frasher said. “We greatly value the services provided by the health unit and the convenience of its location to residents.”

“I am pleased at the willingness of City Manager David Frasher to sit down and work with me on the goal of more stable funding for the Garland County Health Unit,” Davis said. “The services provided by our local health unit are critical to the citizens of Hot Springs and our entire county. I look forward to continued collaborative communication with the city on a number of issues.”

“Improving the health status of the community is a primary goal of not only our local healthcare professionals, but also our locally elected leadership,” Mayor Pat McCabe added. “Through the collaborative effort of the city and county, the vital programming of the Garland County Health Unit will remain conveniently located to city and county residents.”

The funding amounts for both entities will be incorporated into their budget presentations later this year, each of which will be voted on by the respective governing bodies.
